INSTITUTIONS OF LEARNING FOUNDED
Schools or Monasteries were established in different parts of Wales. One of these was at Llandaff under Dubricius; another at Llanilltyd Fawr, now called Llantwit Major, in Glamorganshire, under Illtyd or Illutus, where many of the Enlish nobility were educated. The famous Monastery of Bangor-Iscoed was also founded at the same time, if not through the exertions of St. German, certainly on his advice and recommendation. All these shcolls became celebrated. It is said that one under Dubricius at Llandaff, had not less than a thousand pupils. Great numbers flocked to it from all parts of Britain, and among its pupils were SS. Teilo and Sampson. Scarcely less famous, and to a dweller in Glamorganshire more interesting, was the College of Illtyd or Illutus, on of his pupils being the renowned Gildas. Another famous seat of learning was the Monastery of Llancarvan, in Glamorganshire, founded by St. Cadoc, and of which he became the first abbot. To this institution were admitted, not only candidates for the monastic life, but also the sons of the chiefs and petty kings of Wales; so that it became celebrated both for religious and secular learning. It was followed by many other places of learning usually bearing the name of Bangor, i.e., "high choir, or circle." We referred a moment ago to Bangor-Iscoed ("under the wood"). It is said to have contained two thousand monks at the time of its destruction by King Ethelred, twelve hundred of whom were massacred.(1) Another Bangor was that which still bears the name, of of which David was (as was not uncommon) both Abbot and Bishop. Yet another Bangor was the Monastery of Llanelwy, now St. Asaph, founded under the direction of Kentigern or St. Mungo, who, with his pupil St. Asaph, founded that See in the sixth century. St. Kentigern was also the founder of the See of Glasgow and its first Bishop. Into the Monastery of St. Asaph men of all ranks and ages pressed to the number of 965. Besides these, there were the White House or Whitland, founded by Paulinus in Carmarthenshire, at which St. David was educated; also the great College of Llanbadarn Fawr, founded by St. Padarn the Great, where one of the most remarkable churches in the Principality still exists. N.B. --- The word "Llan," in the old Celtic or British dialect, always means Church. We find it everywhere in Walses to this day.

The Celtic Church
It is important to note here that Christian Monks, Abbots, Priests, and Bishops in ancient Celtic Christianity were not exclusively celibate males like in the Roman Catholic Church but rather there were and are married, Abbots, Priests, and Bishops in The Celtic Church. In addition there were and are both male and female Monks in Celtic Christianity, and many of the Monks in the Ancient Celtic Church were married. The Celtic Christian Church did not and does not require either its Priests or its Monks to be celibate, instead marriage was and is heartily encouraged. Monasteries in the ancient Celtic Church were composed largely of married couples, husband and wife Monks. There is some dispute or room for debate as to whether or not the women members of a Celtic Christian Monastery in Ancient Britain were actually granted the title of Monk or not. Whether they were granted the title of Monk or not those women lived the life of a Christian Monk and it is a documented fact beyond question that there were active devout women members of most Celtic Monasteries in Ancient Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England. None the less the Celtic Church Monasteries were still a Patriarchal male dominated society and Church system, regardless of arguments to the contrary by modernist church history revisionists and the New Age Celtic Movement. The True Celtic Church like all True Christian Churches was and is Patriarchal in nature and organization. Christian Identity is Patriarchal and Calvinism is Patriarchal. The Ministers of the Protestant Reformation taught the Biblical Principle of the Priesthood of all Believers in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, yet they also upheld the Biblical Principles of Patriarchal society and culture. The true Christian Church was and is Patriarchal and The True Celtic Church upholds that sound doctrine and system. None the less women are honored and held in high esteem within Celtic Communities, the Celtic Church, and Celtic Christianity.
The LINK above LINKS to a Wickipedia Article which contains a lot of Roman Catholic Revisionists statements that are totally untrue and an outright attempt to rewrite and distort history. Some quotes from authoritative books and articles on the subject will be added to this page to prove that point. Some of the information in the Wickipedia article is correct. The following Quote from the article we will prove to be utterly false and totally misleading!
[Quote] It is easy to exaggerate the cohesiveness of the Celtic Christian communities. Their members never saw themselves in opposition to the Catholic establishment based on Rome as did the Arians, Priscillianists or the Donatists in North Africa. Even at the height of the conflict between these communities and other Christian groups, they acknowledged the primacy of the Pope and respected his specific instructions.[1] [End of Quote]
Although it is true that the Celtic Church was nothing at all like the Arians, Priscillianists, or the Donatists, it is false to state that they never saw themselves in opposition to the Roman Catholic establishment and its Headquarters in Rome. They withstood Rome on many points and the Roman Papists were eager to subvert, corrupt, and dominate the clergy of the Celtic Culdee Church! The Celtic Clergy were equally eager to defend the simplicity and purity of the true Christian Faith as they understood it according to Holy Scriptures. It is true that the Celtic Church considered itself to be of the Catholic Faith as did all the known true Christian churches at that time period in history. The word "catholic" simply meant "universal" and that is still its true meaning. It is true that Celtic Christians considered their Celtic Church to be part of the one whole "Universal" or "Catholic" Church of Jesus Christ, none the less their use of the word "catholic" did not mean "Roman Catholic" and for that matter still does not. This word "Catholic" and the true meaning noted is used in several of the Ancient Christian Creeds honored and upheld by Protestant Churches even during the height of the Protestant Reformation, such as the Athanasian Creed. It is a well documented fact that the clergy of the Celtic Church did not count their church as being Roman Catholic as the author of the above mentioned article strongly and erroneously implies. This is stressed and noted here since there is a strong move on by members and clergy of the Roman Catholic Church to rewrite and/or suppress the true history of the Ancient Celtic Church.
The Celtic Church refused to acknowledge the primacy of the Pope!
That is a documented fact of history!
The recorded writings of Ancient & Modern Historians note this fact!
[Quote] The Culdee Church flourished for many
centuries, independent of Rome, and knew no
supremacy of the Bishop of Rome, held no dogmas
concerning the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin
Mary nor the "Infallibility of the Pope". In short, it was
far from being a "Roman Church." [End of Quote]
