INSTITUTIONS OF LEARNING FOUNDED

Schools or Monasteries were established in different parts of Wales.  One of these was at Llandaff under Dubricius; another at Llanilltyd Fawr, now called Llantwit Major, in Glamorganshire, under Illtyd or Illutus, where many of the Enlish nobility were educated.  The famous Monastery of Bangor-Iscoed was also founded at the same time, if not through the exertions of St. German, certainly on his advice and recommendation. All these shcolls became celebrated.  It is said that one under Dubricius at Llandaff, had not less than a thousand pupils.  Great numbers flocked to it from all parts of Britain, and among its pupils were SS. Teilo and Sampson. Scarcely less famous, and to a dweller in Glamorganshire more interesting, was the College of Illtyd or Illutus, on of his pupils being the renowned Gildas. Another famous seat of learning was the Monastery of Llancarvan, in Glamorganshire, founded by St. Cadoc, and of which he became the first abbot.  To this institution were admitted, not only candidates for the monastic life, but also the sons of the chiefs and petty kings of Wales; so that it became celebrated both for religious and secular learning.  It was followed by many other places of learning usually bearing the name of Bangor, i.e., "high choir, or circle."  We referred a moment ago to Bangor-Iscoed ("under the wood").  It is said to have contained two thousand monks at the time of its destruction by King Ethelred, twelve hundred of whom were massacred.(1) Another Bangor was that which still bears the name, of of which David was (as was not uncommon) both Abbot and Bishop.  Yet another Bangor was the Monastery of Llanelwy, now St. Asaph, founded under the direction of Kentigern or St. Mungo, who, with his pupil St. Asaph, founded that See in the sixth century.  St. Kentigern was also the founder of the See of Glasgow and its first Bishop.  Into the Monastery of St. Asaph men of all ranks and ages pressed to the number of 965.  Besides these, there were the White House or Whitland, founded by Paulinus in Carmarthenshire, at which St. David was educated; also the great College of Llanbadarn Fawr, founded by St. Padarn the Great, where one of the most remarkable churches in the Principality still exists. The Origin And Early History Of Christianity In Britain
[HS00126]

Author: Andrew Gray, D.D.

Presents reliable evidence that St. Joseph of Arimathea established the first Christian church in Britain between 36 - 39 A.D. Reprint of the book originally published in 1880."

The long held belief that Christianity was introduced into Britain around 600 AD by St. Augustine is shown by the author to be unfounded. He presents the evidence that St. Joseph of Arimathea visited Britain around 36 to 39 AD and established the first Christian Church, then called 'Culdee', where is now the West country town of Glastonbury. The author states:

The first converts are said to have been members of the royal family of Siluria. It is asserted that there were two cradles of Christianity in Britain ----'the Chrystal Isle,' called by the Saxons Glaston, in Somersetshire, where Joseph is believed to have settled and taught; and Siluria, where Churches and Schools were founded by the Silurian dynasty.

. . . This decision laid down the principle that the Churches of France and Spain were bound to give way, in point of antiquity and precedency, to the Church of Britain, which was founded by Joseph of Arimathea, 'immediatly after the passion of Christ.'

. . . Regarding this date (given by Gildas) as our starting point, we have several testimonies assigning the first introduction of Christianity in or about the same year to Joseph of Arimathea.
The Culdee Church flourished for many centuries, independent of Rome, and knew no supremacy of the Bishop of Rome, held no dogmas concerning the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary nor the "Infallibility of the Pope". In short, it was far from being a "Roman Church." Gray:
We possess evidence that Churches were erected in Britain before the close of the second century, and whatever direction our investigations take, we find authority for the statement that the Church of Joseph of Avalon, or Glastonbury, was the first and oldest of them all, many affirming that it was the oldest or senior Church in the whole world.
Dr. Gray has painstakingly researched the material covered in this informative, as well as exciting, historical study and has carefully substantiated the .......

The Culdee Church

Celt, Druid and Culdee
 [HS00104]

The Culdee Church

Author: Isabel Hill Elder

A study of Druidism - their origin, teaching, and government and their religious beliefs that prepared Britain to receive apostolic Christianity that arrived in Britain shortly after the Ascension of Our Lord.

Just a few of the questions asked and answered by Mrs. Elder in this, her fourth edition of this splendid book, are...which is the first Christian Church outside Jerusalem? Who took Christianity to the Isles? Who were the Druids and what did they teach? Who built the roads for the Roman chariots?

In this most important work, she dispels the erroneous belief that Britian was uncivilized compared with Rome and that the Druids were a mischievous sect. The work and teachings of
this early British Church (Culdee) for 1100 years is detailed in this remarkable book. Although declared heretical by Rome in A.D. 705, the Culdee Church struggled on as distinct from the Romans until it was eclipsed by the Roman Catholic Church in the 12th century.

Mrs. Elder states what is little known but of the greatest importance...
the fact that Christianity, as a Church, was born in England before anywhere else, and that England was a professed Christian country one hundred years before Rome and, in fact, when Rome was still persecuting Christians.

She draws attention to the singular change, without any opposition, from Druidism to Christianity, which was understandable in that fundamentally they had no great difference in belief. An interesting point is also made as to the difference between
the British Church and the Church of England.

The rise and establishment of Christianity in Britian has been dealt with by many writers but in these pages new light has been thrown on the origin of the Culdees, with whom rests the introduction and, with their successors, the defense of the Apostolic Christianity brought by those early Christians to Britian shortly after the Ascension of our Lord.

The Celtic Church

It is important to note here that Christian Monks, Abbots, Priests, and Bishops in ancient Celtic Christianity were not exclusively celibate males like in the Roman Catholic Church but rather there were and are married, Abbots, Priests, and Bishops in The Celtic Church.  In addition there were and are both male and female Monks in Celtic Christianity, and many of the Monks in the Ancient Celtic Church were married. The Celtic Christian Church did not and does not require either its Priests or its Monks to be celibate, instead marriage was and is heartily encouraged.  Monasteries in the ancient Celtic Church were composed largely of married couples, husband and wife Monks.  There is some dispute or room for debate as to whether or not the women members of a Celtic Christian Monastery in Ancient Britain were actually granted the title of Monk or not. Whether they were granted the title of Monk or not those women lived the life of a Christian Monk and it is a documented fact beyond question that there were active devout women members of most Celtic Monasteries in Ancient Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England.  None the less the Celtic Church Monasteries were still a Patriarchal male dominated society and Church system, regardless of arguments to the contrary by modernist church history revisionists and the New Age Celtic Movement.  The True Celtic Church like all True Christian Churches was and is Patriarchal in nature and organization.   Christian Identity is Patriarchal and Calvinism is Patriarchal.  The Ministers of the Protestant Reformation taught the Biblical Principle of the Priesthood of all Believers in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, yet they also upheld the Biblical Principles of Patriarchal society and culture.  The true Christian Church was and is Patriarchal and The True Celtic Church upholds that sound doctrine and system.  None the less women are honored and held in high esteem within Celtic Communities, the Celtic Church, and Celtic Christianity.

The LINK above LINKS to a Wickipedia Article which contains a lot of Roman Catholic Revisionists statements that are totally untrue and an outright attempt to rewrite and distort history.  Some quotes from authoritative books and articles on the subject will be added to this page to prove that point.  Some of the information in the Wickipedia article is correct.  The following Quote from the article we will prove to be utterly false and totally misleading!

[Quote] It is easy to exaggerate the cohesiveness of the Celtic Christian communities. Their members never saw themselves in opposition to the Catholic establishment based on Rome as did the Arians, Priscillianists or the Donatists in North Africa. Even at the height of the conflict between these communities and other Christian groups, they acknowledged the primacy of the Pope and respected his specific instructions.[1]    [End of Quote]

Although it is true that the Celtic Church was nothing at all like the Arians, Priscillianists, or the Donatists, it is false to state that they never saw themselves in opposition to the Roman Catholic establishment and its Headquarters in Rome.  They withstood Rome on many points and the Roman Papists were eager to subvert, corrupt, and dominate the clergy of the Celtic Culdee Church!  The Celtic Clergy were equally eager to defend the simplicity and purity of the true Christian Faith as they understood it according to Holy Scriptures.  It is true that the Celtic Church considered itself to be of the Catholic Faith as did all the known true Christian churches at that time period in history.  The word "catholic" simply meant "universal" and that is still its true meaning.  It is true that Celtic Christians considered their Celtic Church to be part of the one whole "Universal" or "Catholic" Church of Jesus Christ, none the less their use of the word "catholic" did not mean "Roman Catholic" and for that matter still does not.  This word "Catholic" and the true meaning noted is used in several of the Ancient Christian Creeds honored and upheld by Protestant Churches even during the height of the Protestant Reformation, such as the Athanasian Creed. It is a well documented fact that the clergy of the Celtic Church did not count their church as being Roman Catholic as the author of the above mentioned article strongly and erroneously implies.  This is stressed and noted here since there is a strong move on by members and clergy of the Roman Catholic Church to rewrite and/or suppress the true history of the Ancient Celtic Church.

The Celtic Church refused to acknowledge the primacy of the Pope!

That is a documented fact of history!

The recorded writings of Ancient & Modern Historians note this fact!

centuries, independent of Rome, and knew no

Andrew Gray D.D. from his book entitled -

THE ORIGIN and EARLY HISTORY of CHRISTIANITY IN BRITAIN

...this did not include any right of the Pope of Rome to interfere with their affairs ...

If it is fair to suppose that the coming of Augustine from Rome, when only a monk in priests' orders, is equivalent to the establishment of an Italian hierarchy in England, it is no less reasonable to argue that Theodore's selection of monks belonging to the monasteries founded by the old British Church, to be Bishops among the Anglo-Saxons, was equally a continuance of the ancient Christianity of Britain.  Henceforth there was a double line of Apostolic Ministry in the Anglo-Saxon Church; and when by degrees the Scottish, Irish and British (i.e. Welsh) Churches agreed to recognize the primacy of the Archbishop of Canterbury [1] (always understanding that this did not include any right of the Pope of Rome to interfere with their affairs), this double succession was further strengthened, nay, rather it was made a threefold cord through the consecration of St. David by the Patriarch of Jerusalem.

[1]  The Church in Wales did not recognize the primacy of the Archbishop of Canterbury till the year A.D. 1115.  Then took place a union between the Welsh and the English Churches, which prepared the way for the union of Wales with England.

The Real Saint Patrick
By: Pastor Alan Campbell

Pastor Alan shows from Patrick's own writings in his "Confession" that he had had a genuine salvation experience and was totally Christ-centred in his outlook - as is also evidenced by his hymn, known as "Patrick's Breastplate". The Papacy has tried to claim that it sent Patrick on his mission to Ireland but there is no mention of this by Patrick - not surprisingly! - nor, indeed, by the reigning Pope of the time. Patrick, as the Apostle of the primitive Celtic, Culdee Church knew nothing of Popes, Cardinals, Masses, Purgatory the Immaculate Conception or Bodily Assumption of the Virgin Mary - he was a true Bible Christian! In fact, this Apostle so inspired missionary zeal that from Ireland, "land of saints and scholars", teams of missionaries set out for the British mainland and even travelled as far as Switzerland.

The Biblical Missing Years of Christ - ANSWERED
[ERC00713]

Presented by E. Raymond Capt M.A., A.I.A., F.S.A. SCOT

IT'S HERE! Artisan Publishers' New Expanded Version with twenty four new pages of full color photographs added!

The silent years of Jesus between 12 and 30 and an examination of the historical records concerning Joseph of Arimathea the great uncle of Jesus as a provincial Roman Senator and metal merchant. It was rumored that he owned many of the merchant ships that came to England from Rome and Phoenicia to barter for metal and other goods. Did Jesus accompany his uncle to this isle of the west? Mr. Capt reveals that there is substantial evidence to support that he did.

EXCERPT:
One day a small boat, from one of the large merchant ships anchored in the Bristol Channel, tied up at the causeway of the Lake Village. A bearded man and a slim young boy in his early teens stepped ashore. They were no strangers to the villagers who crowded around to welcome them. The merchant had been coming by their village for many years, on his way to the lead mines of the Mendip Hills. It was known that he held a very important position in the powerful Roman government and carried the title ""Nobilus Decurio"". It was rumored that he owned many of the merchant ships that came to these Isle of the West, from Rome and Phoenicia, to barter for metal and other goods

The auburn haired lad was also known. He had accompanied His uncle on a prior visit, staying at the village and exploring the surrounding territory, while His uncle conducted his business at the nearby Mendip lead mines. But this time a woman, perhaps in her early thirties was with them. As the boy helped the woman ashore, the crew proceeded to unload various sized chests and sacks, obviously belonging to them. Accommodations were soon found and the baggage was carried to one of the tiny huts facing the estuary.

In the weeks that followed, the merchant and the boy constructed a wattle ......"

Planting The Faith Westward

(VIDEO)

[VT00906]

Author: Covenant Productions by E. Raymond Capt

This video shows how the Faith of Christ was carried, by the early Christian missionaries, from Palestine to the far West in the first half of the first century A. D., and its resulting impact upon the Celtic communities of the Brittanic Isles.

After the departure of the Roman occupying forces in 410 A.D., the rising stars of the saints: Ninian, Columba, Finian, and many others brought the light of Christianity even to the Picts of the far North of Scotland.

Through their teachings, the Faith spread Southwards from the monasteries of Iona and Whithorn into Northumbria, centered at Lindisfarne, or Holy Island reaching as far South as the Channel coastland.

Centuries later, seeking freedom of worship, the Pilgrim Fathers took the faith across the Atlantic Ocean into the wilderness of the New World, planting a code of Christian conduct based solely on the Word of Holy Scripture.

Shown are the holy sites of the monasteries of Iona, Whithorn, and Lindisfarne (or Holy Island), Christian sites which spread the Gospel of the Kingdom.
